This Scenic Ohio River Is the Perfect Starting Point for a Day of Paddling

Rapids that can hit Class III in high water sit just downstream from one quiet gravel beach.

That’s a bold opening act for a river launch with picnic tables and a grill.

The river’s name comes from a Lenape word generally translated as ‘river of little owls. It also became Ohio’s very first state water trail back in 2005.

I like how a place this calm-looking carries that much history.

Below the launch, tall sandstone bluffs line the banks for about 3.3 miles. A short walk from the water leads to a waterfall.

Smallmouth bass and rare salamanders share the current with your paddle.

I believe the best river days start somewhere simple and then get better around every bend.

So where exactly do you put in, and what waits after that first push off the gravel?

Every great paddling day needs a good first push, and Kokosing Scenic River – Water Trail – Millwood Access delivers one. The site is Site #7 on the Kokosing River Water Trail map.

The Knox County Park District redesigned this access in 2007. The goal was to make visits easier while also protecting the river itself.

The star of the show is a gravel beach that makes launching simple. No muddy wrestling match with your kayak required, which is always a nice way to begin.

Parking sits right at the access point, so the carry stays short. That matters when you’re hauling a canoe, a cooler, and maybe a reluctant teenager.

Low water can make the launch a little trickier. Rocks near the edge can get slick, so take your time stepping in.

Water shoes with good grip are a smart pick here. So is a quick look at the riverbank before you commit to a spot.

A calm, careful start sets the tone for the whole trip. Once you’re floating, the scenery takes over and the parking lot feels miles away.

Most rivers ease you in slowly. Here, the excitement shows up almost right away.

Just downstream from the launch sit the Factory Rapids. During high flows, they can reach Class III conditions, which is serious stuff for a quiet Ohio river.

Strong paddlers should stay river left to run them. Not feeling it today?

Portage on river right and walk your boat around.

There’s zero shame in carrying your kayak for a few minutes. Your pride heals faster than a cracked hull, after all.

Most of the Kokosing runs gentle, with mostly Class I and II rapids. That makes Factory Rapids the spicy part of an otherwise mellow menu.

Water levels change everything on this stretch. Ideal floating levels usually fall between 100 and 200 cubic feet per second.

Check river flow before you leave home, not when you’re standing on the gravel. A quick look online can save you a soggy surprise.

Inexperienced boaters should skip the river during flood stage entirely. The Kokosing will still be there next weekend, looking just as pretty and far friendlier.

Those Sandstone Bluffs Steal The Whole Show

About 3.3 miles of high sandstone bluffs stretch downstream from the launch. That’s a lot of jaw-dropping rock for one easy paddle.

This section ranks as one of the most scenic parts of the whole river. The cliffs rise above long, deep pools and quick little riffles.

Geology fans, this one’s for you. The Kokosing area shows off Blackhand and Logan sandstone formations.

You don’t need to know a single rock name to enjoy it, though. The cliffs look impressive whether you’re a scientist or just someone with a sandwich.

Slow down through this stretch if the current allows. Drifting past towering stone walls feels very different than racing by them.

Bring a waterproof phone case or a dry bag for your camera. You’ll probably want photos, and the river doesn’t care about your warranty.

Morning and late afternoon light can make the rock glow in warm colors. Plan your launch time around that, and the bluffs will reward your patience.

Honestly, it’s hard to believe this scenery sits in rural Ohio farm country. Then again, surprises are half the fun of a river trip.

A Waterfall Is Waiting Just A Short Walk Away

Waterfalls and kayak trips make a great team. On this route, you get both in one afternoon.

Honey Run Waterfalls sit about a five-minute walk from the river. You’ll find the path downstream from Factory Rapids.

Honey Run Waterfall is a short walk from the river downstream of Factory Rapids. That’s a sweet spot for families or anyone easing into river life.

Pulling over for a short hike breaks up the day nicely. Your arms get a rest, and your legs finally remember they exist.

Pack shoes that work both on wet rocks and dirt trails. Flip-flops and slippery stones are not a friendly combo.

Keep an eye on time if you stop. Shuttle plans and daylight both matter on a river trip.

Want a longer day on the water? Paddlers can continue past Honey Run all the way to Zuck Road.

Either choice gives you a solid adventure from the same starting point. Short and sweet or long and lazy, the Kokosing lets you pick your speed.

Keep Your Eyes Peeled For A Snot Otter

Yes, the Eastern Hellbender has some funny nicknames, and snot otter is one of them. This large salamander is state-endangered in Ohio.

Hellbenders need excellent water quality to survive. A conservation program released them into the Kokosing in 2016.

That says a lot about this river. The Kokosing ranks as one of Ohio’s most diverse and healthy streams.

Its waters support dozens of fish species, plus 24 amphibian species. Mayflies and other tiny critters also signal clean, healthy water.

Above the surface, the show keeps going. Deer, turkey, and many birds live along the banks, including bald eagles.

Spotting an eagle from a kayak is a real thrill. Try not to tip over while pointing, though.

If you see wildlife, give it space and keep your voice low. Animals were here first, and they don’t sign visitor waivers.

Pack out every scrap of trash you bring. Keeping this river clean protects the hellbenders and keeps the Kokosing special for the next paddler.

Smallmouth bass swim here in big numbers, and that’s great news for anyone holding a fishing rod. The Kokosing is home to more than 50 fish species.

Flathead catfish, freshwater drum, and northern pike also call this river home. That’s a pretty exciting lineup for one rural Ohio waterway.

Kokosing Scenic River – Water Trail – Millwood Access offers good fishing opportunities right from the site. You don’t even need to launch a boat to cast a line.

Fishing from a kayak opens up even more water. Deep pools and riffles give fish plenty of places to hang out.

Make sure you carry a valid Ohio fishing license. Rules apply here just like anywhere else in the state.

Catch-and-release is a kind choice on a river this healthy. Wet your hands before handling fish and let them go quickly.

Even a slow fishing day beats a busy day indoors. Worst case, you’ll get great scenery and a decent excuse for a nap afterward.

Not everyone in your group needs to paddle. Some folks are happy just hanging out on shore with snacks.

The Millwood site has picnic tables, a grill, and an information kiosk. That’s a nice setup for a small riverside park.

A porta-john is available seasonally from April through October. Planning a winter visit?

Plan accordingly.

Swimming, fishing, and lounging by the water are all popular ways to spend time here. Kids especially love the rocky shoreline.

The kiosk is worth a quick stop before launching. River maps and site info can help you plan your route.

Bring a trash bag for anything you pack in. Leaving the site cleaner than you found it is always a good look.

The address is 11640 Bridge Street, Howard, OH 43028. Some maps may list it a little differently, so double-check your GPS.

Grilled lunch after a morning float? That sounds like a perfect plan to me.

Why pick between biking and paddling when you can do both? The paddle-pedal adventure is a local favorite idea.

The Kokosing Gap Trail runs near the river with several access points. You can float one way and bike the other.

The Knox County Park District also runs a geotrail along the river. Geocaching adds a treasure hunt to your outdoor day.

History buffs will appreciate the backstory here. Early settlers called this waterway Owl Creek.

The name Kokosing comes from a Lenape word meaning river of owls. The valley was once part of Lenape territory.

Later, the area saw frontier settlement and a busy milling era. Today, Kokosing Scenic River – Water Trail – Millwood Access offers a peaceful way to explore it all.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources declared the river scenic in 1997. That protection covers 41 miles of the main stem.

A river this well loved deserves more than one visit. Something tells me you’ll be back with a bike rack and a bigger lunch.
