This Century-Old Ohio Farm Hides A Winery So Cozy You’ll Stay Long After You Planned

A Slovenian immigrant bought a fruit farm in 1916, and his family still works the same ground over a century later. That’s four generations on one patch of northeast Ohio dirt, and counting.

The farm now holds more than 175 acres of vines. That’s the largest estate of its kind in the whole state, which is a lot of grapes for one family to keep track of.

Inside, a cozy chalet waits with a fireplace for chilly Ohio months. Outside, grassy hillside picnic tables welcome dogs and their people, plus a pavilion for summer shows.

I like that live music plays four days a week here, so there’s almost always a reason to linger. I can’t imagine stopping by for just a quick look and then heading home on time.

Anton Debevc had no idea his 1916 fruit farm would still be in family hands more than a hundred years later. Yet here we are, and Debonné Vineyards stands on that very same land.

Anton came to Ohio from Slovenia and started with fruit. His son, Tony Sr., expanded the vineyard in the late 1960s and pushed the farm in a bold new direction.

Tony Sr. and his son Tony began commercial production of estate beverages in 1971. One year later, in 1972, the family built a production facility and a charming Chalet.

That Chalet still anchors the property today. Tony Debevc now serves as principal proprietor, keeping the family name front and center.

The fourth generation joined in too. In 2008, Tony Jr. launched his own onsite craft operation inside the existing facility.

The State of Ohio took notice in 2016. Officials awarded the family a Century Farm designation to honor a full hundred years of farming.

The business then celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. Not many places can claim both a century of farming and a half-century of hospitality on one address.

More than 175 acres of vines. That number makes this property the largest estate of its kind in Ohio, and it’s not a close race.

Nearly all of those grapes stay right on the farm. The family uses them in-house, so what grows outside the door ends up in the tasting flights inside.

The location helps a lot. The estate sits in the Grand River Valley American Viticultural Area, a special grape-growing region recognized at the federal level.

Lake Erie plays a sneaky role here. The big lake acts like a thermal blanket, helping prevent frost and wild temperature swings that grapes really dislike.

That steady climate supports a wide lineup. The estate makes everything from dry reds and whites to sweeter blends, plus sparkling options and frozen-grape specialties.

Fruit lovers have plenty to explore too. Flights let you sample several options without committing to a full pour of anything.

So when you gaze across those rows, you’re seeing the real source. I like knowing the scenery isn’t just decoration, because it’s basically the whole menu growing in the sunshine.

Winter in northeast Ohio can be brutal, but the Chalet at Debonné Vineyards offers a cozy place to warm up beside the fireplace on gray, snowy afternoons.

The family built the Chalet in 1972 alongside the original production facility. Today, it remains a welcoming spot for visitors to relax and enjoy the winery.

Inside, you’ll find comfortable seating, including spots near the fire that are especially inviting on chilly days.

The main bar is where you can place your order, and cheese plates are available to enjoy with your wine.

There’s also a gift shop inside the main building, where you can browse and purchase carryout selections to take home.

The facility is accessible to visitors with disabilities, making it easier for guests to enjoy their visit.

Honestly, a fireplace can be dangerous for anyone with a schedule. You sit down for a quick tasting, the fire crackles, and suddenly your afternoon has quietly rearranged itself.

A Slovenian Sausage Sandwich on the menu feels like a sweet nod to the family’s roots. It has appeared on the casual menu here, and it fits the farm’s story perfectly.

Food is served daily and year-round. The casual menu leans on grilled sandwiches, appetizers, and cheese plates, which is exactly what grazing calls for.

Appetizers have included Spinach Artichoke Dip and Fresh Bruschetta. Cheddar Swiss Fondue has shown up too, and good luck ignoring melted cheese.

Lighter options round things out. Smokey Salmon Spread and Roasted Red Pepper Hummus have both made appearances on the lineup.

Burger fans have options as well. A Marinated Gourmet Classic Longhorn Burger has been part of the menu at times.

Menus can shift, so check what’s available before you set your heart on one item. That small step saves you from a very sad sandwich moment.

My advice is simple. Order a few plates for the table, share everything, and let the snacking stretch out as long as the conversation does.

Warm weather changes everything at Debonné Vineyards. The outdoor area is huge, and it comes with its own live music pavilion, outside bar, and grill.

The Grill runs during patio season. It serves specialty sandwiches, salads, and appetizers, so you don’t have to head indoors when hunger hits.

Hours for The Grill change with the season. In October, for example, it has opened Friday evenings plus Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Grassy hillside picnic tables add a relaxed, backyard feel. Spread out a few snacks, kick back, and watch the sky slowly change color.

Families and friend groups can claim a table and settle into the view. The open layout gives everyone room to breathe on a sunny day.

Plan around the weather if you want the full outdoor setup. Patio season is when this space really comes alive with food, music, and fresh air.

Sunscreen is a smart call in summer. So is clearing your evening plans, because leaving a hillside picnic table early on a perfect day takes serious willpower.

Four Nights Of Live Music Make Leaving Way Harder

Four Nights Of Live Music Make Leaving Way Harder

Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday all come with live entertainment here. That’s four chances a week to catch a show without buying a concert ticket.

The schedule lines up nicely with the hours. Friday runs the latest, staying open until 11 PM, so it’s the prime night for lingering.

Wednesday stays open until 10 PM. That makes it a sneaky midweek escape when your week needs a little rescue.

Saturday hours run from noon until 8 PM. Sunday closes earlier at 6 PM, which suits a laid-back afternoon outing.

Every day opens at noon. Monday and Tuesday close at 6 PM, so those are quieter times for a simple, unhurried visit.

Warm months often move the music outdoors to the pavilion. Cooler months bring things inside, where the Chalet stays toasty.

Check the events calendar before you go. Lineups change, and knowing who’s playing helps you pick the right night.

One word of caution, though. A good band plus a comfy seat is how a one-hour stop turns into a full evening.

Chicken and waffles drizzled with ice wine hot honey syrup is one of the brunch dishes featured during Debonné Vineyards’ annual March Ice Wine Festival.

The brunch menu changes weekly. Past offerings have included flapjacks with maple ice wine syrup and French toast crunch topped with strawberries and bananas.

Summer brings a different mood. Debonné Vineyards hosted its 2026 Jazz Festival on June 28, featuring live jazz performances and food options.

Car fans have an event of their own. The Annual Classic Car Show took place on August 15, 2026, with classic vehicles displayed on the winery grounds.

October brings seasonal fun with the Trick or Treat Trail, giving visitors a festive reason to explore the area during fall.

The calendar doesn’t stop there. Debonné Vineyards hosts wine trails, festivals, tours, parties, shows, dinners, classes, and workshops throughout the year.

Event dates and details can change, so check the winery’s official calendar before visiting. Then pick an event that suits your interests and plan your trip around it.

Leaving the dog at home always feels a little guilty. At Debonné Vineyards, you can skip that guilt entirely, because the property is pet-friendly.

The grassy hillside picnic tables are dog-friendly too. Your pup gets fresh air and a view, and you get company that never interrupts.

Bring the basics for a smooth day. A water bowl, a leash, and a few treats go a long way on a long afternoon outside.

Accessibility is another thoughtful touch. The facility is handicap accessible, which helps families with different needs visit together comfortably.

Before heading out, stop by the gift shop inside the main building. It carries carryout selections, so you can grab something to enjoy later at home.

The gift shop also makes shopping easy for birthdays or holidays. A souvenir from a century-old farm beats another random coffee mug.

I believe the best outings include everyone, furry members included. Few things feel as relaxing as a sunny hillside, a good snack, and a happy dog snoozing under the table.

Planning a group trip takes a little more effort. Debonné Vineyards asks groups of 10 or more guests to register before they arrive.

Bigger crowds get extra attention. Groups of 25 or more can book specific tasting packages and accommodations designed for larger parties.

Tours and tasting packages are available too. They’re a great way to learn the family’s story and see how the farm’s grapes become finished products.

The property also works as an event venue. Weddings, parties, corporate meetings, and reunions can all happen against this vineyard backdrop.

Finding it is easy. The address is 7840 Doty Road, Madison, OH 44057, roughly an hour east of Cleveland.

That short drive makes it a simple day trip for much of northeast Ohio. You trade city traffic for open fields and long rows of vines.

Plan ahead, especially for special events or big groups. Then show up ready to relax, because this is the kind of place where a quick visit stretches comfortably into the evening.
